What you need to run Dig Window.

Last revised September 29, 2026

Nothing to install on a server, no VPN, no IT project. The office needs a current browser on the computer it already has. Crews need the phone that is already in their pocket, as long as it is from about 2019 or newer.

The office: coordinators and estimators

WhatMinimumWhy
ComputerWindows 10 or 11, or macOS from the last few yearsDig Window runs in the browser; the computer's age barely matters.
BrowserCurrent Chrome or EdgeThe tracker updates live as One Call confirmations and utility responses arrive. Internet Explorer and the old Edge do not work at all. Safari and Firefox are not tested.
ScreenAt least 1280 px wideThe tracker is a dense table, so a 13-inch laptop is fine and a phone is not.
MailboxAnyYou point the Main Contact email on your One Call Contractor ID at your Dig Window intake address, and Dig Window passes a copy of every email to your locates mailbox (how to set it up). No forwarding rules.
Sign-inAn email address you can readNo passwords. Dig Window emails an 8-digit code that works once.

The Dig Window browser extension, which copies each request's drawn dig area from the One Call portal onto your field map, runs in Chrome and Edge only.

The field: crews and foremen

WhatMinimumWhy
iPhoneiPhone 8 or newer on iOS 16.4 or later, using SafariThe field app installs from Safari to the home screen and keeps valid locates on the phone for use with no signal. Older iOS versions lose the offline copy.
AndroidA phone from about 2019 on, Android 10 or later, using ChromeSame reason. Rugged phones from the usual makers qualify.
StorageAbout 500 MB freeLocate packages and the street map around them are stored on the phone. A phone that is completely full can lose them.
LocationLocation services on for the browserThe map shows where the crew is relative to each dig zone.
DataA data plan or Wi-Fi at the yardLocate packages and the streets around each one download whenever the phone has signal and are kept. With no signal the crew still sees the map and opens every valid locate. Satellite imagery needs signal.

Not supported: opening the field app from inside another app's built-in browser (a link tapped in Teams, Outlook or a text message opens in a limited browser, so open it in Safari or Chrome instead), Firefox on iPhone, and tablets or phones that cannot be updated to the versions above. Nothing goes through an app store, so there is nothing for the office to push out to phones.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need new phones for the crews?

Almost never. Any iPhone from the 8 onward that is kept updated, and any Android from about 2019 on, is enough. The one thing to check is free storage.

Does the field app need a tablet?

The field app runs on a phone or a tablet. How locate documents must be kept on site is set by your company's procedures and the rules that apply to your work, so follow those when choosing a device.

Does the office need to install anything?

No. The tracker is a website. The optional browser extension for One Call's portal installs from the Chrome or Edge store in a minute.
